John Botte is a former NYPD detective and lifelong photographer. His unique, powerful and intimate approach to his subject matter can only be described as fine art photojournalism. Shot entirely in a black-and-white format, Botte’s work depicts a deep respect for his subject matter and an innate desire to communicate the moment in a way that reveals humanity. Of his photographic projects, Botte is best-known for his body of work capturing the days following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in Manhattan. His privileged position as a first-responder and experienced detective gave him the access that allowed him to create images that are profound and masterly compositions of a pivotal moment in history. Assigned by the NYPD to document the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy by the Police Commisioner, Botte spent countless hours at Ground Zero in the days and weeks after the attacks, witnessing first-hand and photographing the heroic behind- the-scenes rescue and recovery efforts of 9/11. To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the attacks, longtime friend and noted photographer Timothy White has curated a special selection of Botte’s 911 archive for an exhibition of large-scale, never-seen-before photographs, opening at the Gallery at Calumet Sept. 4, 2011. This folio is a companion and souvenir of the exhibit. ALL of the images from the exhibition are included in this Deluxe, hard bound limited edition folio. ALL images have been painstakingly reproduced from the original negatives, as is the RCS standard. ALL images are presented in uncropped form as initially intended.
